Tony's Show Business Life makes interesting reading
Singer
/ Songwriter Tony had his first big break in the music business when he
was asked to do a "spot"
on the "Cool for Cats" Show with Ked Dodd. His group "Freddie Were (his real
name) and the Werewolves
proved to be a resounding success and subsequently toured the whole of the U.K.
He was
"discovered" by E.M.I.Record's Norman Newell and Jack Good with the result that
he was soon
contracted to the Parlephone Label in 1962. His first single, recorded at the
(soon to become famous)
Abbey Road Studios, was his own song "Stalemate"-backing provide by no less than
by the illustrious
John Barry Orchestra...... this proved to be a monster hit all over Europe.
Guided by his Manager Gerald Marks (Managing Editor of Disc Magazine) he went on
to record four
more other discs including "Keep a Walking" written especially for him by Neil
Sedaka
A
contemporary of Cliff Richard, Tony Rocco (as he became) was billed alongside
all the great names
of the early sixties, His first TV appearances came on " Thank Your Lucky Stars"
(ABC Network),
"Studio Downbeat" (Scottish TV ) and "Young At Heart" (Tyne-Tees TV)
He did numerous live radio appearances including the then famous "Earls Court
Radio Show"with
Chubby Checker. Tony also toured the Moss Empire Theatre circuit on the
"Winifred Atwell Show"
with Gerry Dorsey (later to become Englebert Humperdink), Jimmy
James and Ken Platt.
The
onslaught of "The Beatles" and the others in the "Group" scene signalled the
beginning of the end
for a number of solo singers on the national tour front, but the more talented
found a ready audience
on the London cabaret/club scene.
During this period Tony had a successful three years at the famous "21" Club in
Mayfair, followed
by another well received spell at Charlie Chester's Club in Archer Street. He
the joined the "Magil Five"...
staying with them for about a year from whence he was invited to join the "Ken
Mackintosh
Orchestra.....obviously he jumped at this chance to perform with the famous big
band sound
.....singing nightly .at the Hammersmith Palais for four whole years and loving
every minute of it.
When
you watch him on stage performing all the familiar songs you can see
immediately......
.................not only has he learnt his trade well but he still
has all the old magic..............
